Controlling blood sugar can be challenging, let alone when you are a child/teenager and have school, activities, the extra demands of growth and you are  discovering your independence. The good news is that the diet recommended for someone with diabetes is the same as for the general population, a healthy balanced diet, emphasizing on low glycemic index foods. Our goal is to adapt eating to your  child’s schedule and not the other way round.
The diet will have the right balance of macronutrients and you and your child will learn how to distribute carbohydrate containing foods during the day and other “tricks” to keep blood sugar within the normal range. A detailed diet history, as well as blood measurements for Type 1 or 2 on insulin will be checked, if available, in order for the diet to be tailored to your child’s schedule and activity.
